When the Filipino American Association of Philadelphia celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2012, they were already working on an artistic project to mark the centennial anniversary. The colorful 22-by-65-foot mural, located in the 8400 block of Bustleton Avenue, was designed by muralist Eliseo Silva.
Entitled, Alab Ng Puso: Hearts Ablaze, the mural honors the two-million martyrs of the 1898 War of Philippine Independence. The most prominent figure is Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. The mural also depicts various faces of Filipino American throughout the United States, such as Bruno Mars, and Manny Pacquiao. Of the local Filipino American from the Greater Philadelphia region, Silva has included pianist Cecile Licad, NFL star Roman Gabriel, and yours, truly, for being the first Filipino American broadcaster, when I was a reporter at the ABC station in Philadelphia.
The mural is not quite finished, as you can see, but it truly is an honor to be included on this amazing work of public art. ✿
